Nils Theuninck grew up on the water’s edge and began sailing an Optimist at just six years old and has been part of his life ever since, he says the sense of freedom and adventure is what first attracted him to sailing.
He soon outgrew the Optimist and moved to the ILCA 4 where he was crowned under-16 World Champion in 2011. He has since won a bronze medal in the 2016 ILCA 7 Youth Europeans, a bronze medal at the Red Bull Youth America's Cup in 2017, a gold medal at the GC32 Worlds in 2018, which he sees as one of his biggest achievements in sailing, and also taken the Silver at the GC32 Worlds in 2019. Nils says his other biggest success was topping the Finn World Rankings in 2021 and bringing a bronze medal to Switzerland at the 2021 Finn Europeans.
Nils is excited about competing in the 37th America’s Cup because “You get the chance to race against the best sailors in the world on the most advanced boat ever created.”
Nils has an interest in Chiropractics which he is studying a master’s degree in. He also enjoys cycling, beach volleyball, skiing and claims he can play the ukulele.
